A virtual private network (VPN) is now easier than ever to set up and should be strongly considered if you want to ensure your internet activities remain safe and secure.

VPNs are often used by home workers and remote office businesses to identify private information and network resource sharing. VPN will also allow users to restrictions, such as a regional Internet firewall and Web filtering to prevent, by “tunneling” of the network connection to a variety of areas.

Technically, the VPN protocol outlines the transmission of technical data using an encryption security between two or more non-networked devices in the network, a private, sensitive data should be retained as by a network of objectives for local area or wide.

At one time the internet could only be accessed via dedicated lines (leased lines) directly to the computer, or via a dial up modem. In the late 1990′s that all changed and the internet began to be delivered in a variety of ways from cable, to satellite, to cellular, or wi-fi networks. Although that added flexibility and more ways to access the internet, it also made it less secure as at any point a third party could gain access to your data.

A VPN is by it’s vary nature secure. Most VPN’s use complex algorithms and cryptography to ensure that any data transmitted through the network can only be used by it’s intended recipient. This all takes place automatically and in the background.

In the most common configuration, the firewall is connected to the Internet, and the VPN server is an intranet resource that is attached to the perimeter network.
There may be an issue setting up a Mac VPN server on a corporate network if the address on the VPN server is a NAT’d virtual address.

Solution : Verify that all of the PPTP or L2TP ports on the VPN server are not already being used by clicking Ports in Routing and Remote Access.
Cause : All of the PPTP or L2TP ports on the VPN server are already being used by currently connected remote access clients or demand-dial routers.

The server knows the VPN caller’s remote IP address, so that might be more accurate to write into the Apache log files, etc. However just like ThomasG, I’m trying to setup some Apache restrictions whereby visitors from the internal IP addresses specified by the VPN server are served a different set of content, and as such it doesn’t seem to be possible.
The VPN server provides a routed connection to the network to which the VPN server is attached.

You can make your Windows 2000 Server-based computer a remote-access server so that other users can connect to it by using VPN, and then access shared files on your local drives or on your network. In a typical VPN deployment, a client initiates a virtual point-to-point connection to a remote access server over the Internet. All services typically available to a LAN-connected client (including file and print sharing, Web server access, and messaging) are enabled by VPN.

Easy VPN servers currently assign an IP address to a remote device using either a local pool that is configured on the router or the framed IP address attribute that is defined in RADIUS. Effective with Cisco IOS Release 12.4(9)T, the DHCP Client Proxy feature provides the option of configuring an Easy VPN server to obtain an IP address from a DHCP server. Cause : All of the PPTP or L2TP ports on the VPN server are already being used by currently connected remote access clients or demand-dial routers. Solution : Verify that there are no configured TCP/IP packet filters on the profile properties of the remote access policies on the VPN server (or the RADIUS server if Internet Authentication Service is used) that are preventing the sending or receiving of TCP/IP traffic. The VPN server can communicate with an Internet Authentication Service (IAS) server to authenticate and authorize a user session and maintain the connection until it is terminated by the VPN client or by the VPN server. If RADIUS is selected and configured as the authentication provider on the VPN server, user credentials and parameters of the connection request are sent as RADIUS request messages to a RADIUS server.

In addition to a yes or no response to an authentication request, RADIUS can inform the VPN server of other applicable connection parameters for this user such as maximum session time, static IP address assignment, and so on.

If you do not want to support direct user dialup VPN to modems installed on the server, click to clear the Demand-Dial Routing Connections (Inbound and Outbound) check box. Virtual IPsec Interface Support on a Server allows you to selectively send traffic to different Easy VPN concentrators (servers) as well as to the Internet. Note Network Admission Control is supported on an Easy VPN server only when the server uses IPsec virtual interfaces. An Easy VPN server can be configured so that an Easy VPN remote device can access resources on the corporate network.

If RADIUS is used, you must configure access to the server and allow the CiscoIOS VPN device to send requests to the server. To configure access to the server and allow the Cisco IOS VPN device to send requests to the server,

perform the following steps.

VPN has to be integrated with directory, authentication, and security services, as well as with IP address assignment and name server assignment services.

If the matching remote access policy profile specifies that the EAP-TLS
authentication protocol must be used and EAP is not enabled on the VPN server, the connection attempt is rejected. Cause : The VPN client and the VPN server in conjunction with a remote access policy are not configured to use at least one common authentication method. The VPN server can be configured to use either Windows or RADIUS as an authentication provider. You can configure the VPN server to use either Windows 2000 or RADIUS to authenticate the credentials of the VPN client. To accomplish this, VPN clients can use
a Connection Manager profile to initiate a connection to a VPN server. The VPN server must have IP addresses available in order to assign them to a VPN server’s virtual interface and to VPN clients during the IP Control Protocol (IPCP) negotiation phase that is part of the process of establishing a PPP connection. Solution : Due to the PPTP and L2TP over IPSec packet filtering that is configured on the Internet interface of the VPN server, Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packets used by the ping command are filtered out. If VPN clients use either the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) or Layer-2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) server type option, verify that the selected tunneling protocol is supported by the VPN server. A VPN client

uses special TCP/IP-based protocols, called tunneling protocols, to make a virtual call to a virtual port on a VPN server.

I’ve never seen any broadband company offering an internet connection as “Unlimited Megabytes per Second.” So, how could a web hosting company, which normally doesn’t even own its own access lines, claims to customers that it will give them “Unlimited Bandwidth”?

Most of the time, high bandwidth sites on these “Unlimited” plans will be disconnected, and no refund given. Normally, the web hosting company will say that the site violated its Acceptable Use Policy or Terms of Service.

Whenever you visit a site promoting “Unlimited Bandwidth” as one of the account features, be sure to visit the Acceptable Use Policy, or the Terms of Service. Read the fine text about the so-called “Unlimited” disclaimer.

When you first look for web hosting services (those who state clearly bandwidth offered), you have to make your best estimation and watch your usage carefully in the first few months. Take these factors into consideration while estimating.

** How many users will access your web site?

** How many pages to be access?

** How big are the graphic and HTML files?

Large audio/video files, computer programs, and file downloads require more bandwidth. Flash web sites use tons of bandwidth. Virtual Reality (VR) and full-length three-dimensional audio/visual presentations require the most bandwidth of all.

Though it is not accurate, but still gives you something to work with until your site has been online for a while and actual traffic statistics have been generated.

Don’t fall for the unlimited bandwidth trap that some companies throw at you.
